President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government concludes today, Sunday. The 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority is being held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Tinubu will pass on the leadership mantle to another regional leader.

Tinubu was unanimously endorsed as chairman in July 2023 during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. Over the past year, his leadership has been marked by significant challenges, particularly the rise of military coups in several member states.

Throughout his tenure, President Tinubu took a firm stance against unconstitutional changes of government in Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea. He played a key role in overseeing the imposition of sanctions on these nations, aiming to restore democratic governance and stability in the region.

During his chairmanship, Tinubu faced the complex task of navigating the political and security crises that have plagued the West African subregion. His administration worked closely with other ECOWAS leaders to address these challenges, advocating for regional cooperation and collective action to uphold democratic principles.

In addition to addressing coups, Tinubu’s tenure also focused on economic integration, security collaboration, and combating terrorism. He emphasized the importance of strengthening economic ties among member states to foster development and reduce poverty. Efforts to enhance regional security cooperation were also a priority, as the region continues to grapple with threats from extremist groups.

The 65th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority, held in Abuja, is expected to address ongoing issues and chart a course for the future. As Tinubu hands over the chairmanship, member states will continue to work on strategies to tackle the persistent challenges facing the region.

Tinubu’s departure from the ECOWAS chairmanship comes at a crucial time for Nigeria and the broader West African community. The political landscape remains volatile, and the need for effective regional leadership is more pressing than ever. The incoming chairman will inherit a complex array of issues, from political instability to economic challenges, requiring decisive action and strong leadership.

Reflecting on his tenure, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the support he received from fellow ECOWAS leaders and reiterated his commitment to regional stability and development. “It has been an honor to serve as the chairman of ECOWAS. Together, we have faced significant challenges, but our commitment to democracy and regional cooperation remains unwavering,” Tinubu stated.
