Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has approved the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (rtd) Adekunle Omoyele as the new Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, succeeding Brigadier General Bashir Adewinmbi.

The announcement was made on Thursday through a statement by the Governor’s spokesperson. Omoyele, who recently retired after 35 years of service in the Nigeria Police, previously served as the Chief Security Officer to Governor Adeleke. He was also appointed Special Adviser on Internal Security and Local Matters before taking on his new role as Corps Commander.

The statement highlighted the importance of Amotekun, describing it as a security network established by all South-West governors to complement federal security agencies in tackling crimes in the region.

The appointment follows the resignation of the former Field Commander, Amitolu Shittu, who stepped down in January 2023.

In addition to Omoyele’s appointment, Governor Adeleke approved AIG Wale Bass (rtd) as the Chairman of the Osun Amotekun Board and retained retired Nigerian Army Captain Benedict Olusoji Akanni as the Field Commander of the Corps. These appointments, effective immediately, were conveyed in letters dated July 3rd, 2024, from the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye.
