Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced that Threads now boasts over 175 million active monthly users, marking a significant achievement one year after the app’s launch. Introduced on July 5 last year, Threads was designed to compete with Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). The app saw an explosive start, reaching 100 million users within its first week, thanks in large part to its seamless integration with Instagram.
Despite an initial drop in user numbers as early adopters explored other platforms, Threads has maintained a steady growth trajectory. In a recent post, Zuckerberg shared his excitement: “Threads now has more than 175M monthly actives. What a year.” This growth is reflected in the app’s statistics, showing a rise from 130 million monthly active users in February to over 150 million in April.
While Threads’ growth is impressive, it still trails behind X, which reported 600 million monthly active users as of May, with about half of those users engaging daily. It’s worth noting that X’s user count may include a significant number of bots and automated accounts, which Musk has been actively working to remove.
Meta’s data on user engagement with Threads reveals interesting trends. Approximately 63% of all posts on the platform are text-only, highlighting a user preference for text over images. This indicates that Threads is carving out a niche for itself as a text-centric social media platform, differentiating it from Instagram and other image-focused apps.
The future looks promising for Threads as it continues to build on its first-year successes. Meta plans to introduce new features and improvements to enhance user experience and attract even more users. Zuckerberg’s vision for Threads includes fostering a vibrant community where text-based communication thrives, offering an alternative to the more visual-centric social media platforms.
As Threads enters its second year, Meta’s challenge will be to sustain its growth and continue to innovate in a competitive market. With ongoing updates and a clear focus on user preferences, Threads is well-positioned to become a significant player in the social media landscape. The app’s integration with Instagram remains a strategic advantage, providing a ready-made user base and seamless cross-platform functionality.
