Google Photos has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 10 billion downloads on the Google Play Store, nearly four years after reaching 5 billion. Since its launch in 2015, Google Photos has evolved into a premier cloud-based platform for managing images and videos, becoming an essential tool for many users. The app offers a variety of features, including editing tools, filters, physical photo book orders, and advanced functions like Magic Editor and Magic Eraser powered by Gemini.
A substantial part of the 10 billion downloads is attributed to Google Photos being the default media app for most Android devices since 2017. However, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Samsung still include alternative gallery apps. Despite this competition, the extensive features and generous free storage initially provided by Google Photos have significantly contributed to its widespread adoption.
Interest in Google Photos remains strong, with billions of users continuing to download the app. Although the previously free unlimited backup feature has been replaced by paid Google One subscription plans, few services can match its utility without a cost. Google Photos’ advanced features like AI-powered search, automatic organization, and seamless sharing options have set it apart from other media management apps.
In addition to its impressive download numbers, Google Photos has continually enhanced its user experience with regular updates. Features like “Live Albums” that automatically update with new photos of selected people and pets, and “Shared Libraries” that allow users to share their entire photo collection with a trusted person, have made photo management more intuitive and collaborative. These innovations reflect Google’s commitment to leveraging AI to simplify and enrich user interactions with their digital memories.
Google Photos is now the 10th Google-developed app to reach this remarkable download milestone, following Google Drive’s achievement in early 2024. This exclusive group also includes other popular apps like Chrome, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, the Google app, and core services such as Play Services, Speech Services, and the Android Accessibility Suite.
