Ukrainian forces launched an attack on the strategic port city of Novorossiysk using two explosives-equipped drone boats, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The assault, which took place on Wednesday, was successfully repelled by the Russian military, who destroyed the boats at sea.
Novorossiysk, a major port on the Black Sea, is home to numerous warships from Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, making it a significant target in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. While initial reports from the Russian Defense Ministry did not indicate any damage, local media had reported explosions in the area, causing alarm among residents.
In response to the attack, authorities in Novorossiysk advised residents to remain indoors during the night. Streets in the coastal part of the city were closed, and sirens were sounded to alert the population of the potential danger. This incident marks another in a series of attacks on Novorossiysk, with a notable attack on May 17 resulting in the downing of 44 drones and damage to approximately 30 buildings.
The Russian Defense Ministry also reported repelling additional drone attacks in the Moscow region, as well as the Belgorod and Bryansk regions, which lie along the border with Ukraine. These claims, however, could not be independently verified.
The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has seen a shift in tactics. After initially focusing on repelling Russian troops from its territory, Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian hinterland to disrupt military supplies. These attacks have had varying impacts, with relatively minor consequences on the Russian side compared to the extensive damage and high civilian casualties in Ukraine due to continuous Russian assaults.
The attack on Novorossiysk underscores the escalating nature of the conflict, as both sides continue to leverage advanced military technology in their strategies. For Ukraine, targeting key military installations within Russia represents a strategic effort to weaken Russian capabilities and supply lines. Conversely, Russian forces have maintained relentless attacks on Ukrainian cities, leading to significant destruction and loss of life.
