Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar announced that Nigeria is committed to deepening its bilateral relations with the United States, aligning with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives under President Bola Tinubu. Minister Tuggar made this statement at the 248th U.S. Independence Anniversary Dinner organized by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday.
Highlighting the importance of the Nigeria-U.S. partnership, Tuggar emphasized that enhancing these ties will solidify the longstanding cooperation and friendship between the two nations. He pointed to the recent signing of the Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation Agreement as a significant milestone in President Tinubu’s foreign policy agenda.
“Our bilateral relations have been nurtured over the years through various cooperations that have strengthened our ties,” Tuggar noted. “Since our independence, Nigeria and the U.S. have closely monitored and cultivated our friendship and cooperation. The Nigeria-U.S. Binational Cooperation agreement, finalized this year, is a testament to the importance and cordiality of our relationship.”
Tuggar also mentioned that the recent visits by high-ranking U.S. officials, including the Secretary of State and the newly confirmed Deputy Secretary of State, underscore the dedication of both countries to a successful and robust Binational Cooperation framework.
In addition to the Binational Cooperation Agreement, Tuggar revealed that Nigeria and the U.S. are working on several other agreements and collaborations aimed at further strengthening their partnership. These initiatives are designed to enhance mutual benefits and address shared challenges.
The U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria also highlighted the significant people-to-people connections between the two countries. With approximately 700,000 Nigerians living and working in the U.S., these personal and professional ties form the bedrock of the bilateral relationship.
The deepening of Nigeria-U.S. relations is expected to bring about numerous benefits, including increased economic cooperation, enhanced security collaboration, and improved educational and cultural exchanges. As Nigeria continues to navigate its foreign policy under President Tinubu, the focus on strengthening ties with the U.S. represents a strategic move to foster development and stability.
