Former Federal Commissioner for Information and South South Leader, Edwin Clark, has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the escalating crisis in Rivers State. In a letter dated June 25, 2024, Clark urged Tinubu to caution the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Nyesom Wike, and ensure that Wike allows Governor Siminalayi Fubara to govern peacefully.

Clark stressed that Tinubu’s timely intervention is crucial to prevent the situation from worsening. He warned that ignoring the crisis could result in severe consequences, likening it to “the proverbial Caesar sitting on his oars when Rome was burning.”

Clark commended Tinubu for previous efforts to reduce political tension in Rivers State, referencing a statement by Special Adviser on Media, Ajuri Ngelale, which was well-received by Nigerians. He emphasized the importance of upholding this stance to enable focus on security issues elsewhere in the country.

In his letter, Clark highlighted his confidence in Tinubu’s ability to handle the situation impartially, based on their shared history of opposing anti-democratic policies during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime.

Clark concluded by expressing his deep concern over Wike’s ongoing threats against Governor Fubara, urging Tinubu to act decisively to maintain peace and stability in Rivers State.
