The House of Representatives Committee on Science and Engineering has urged the Federal Government to boost funding for science and technology research to enhance the nation’s socio-economic development. Committee Chairman, Rep. Inuwa Garba, made this appeal during a visit to the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO) in Abuja.

Garba expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the complex, stating, “The government must establish a robust and effective budget system for this institution to ensure it functions properly. Despite significant investments amounting to billions of naira, there has been little positive outcome, possibly due to inadequate funding or other issues.”

He emphasized the need to ensure the institution’s proper functionality in line with international standards. “Globally, science and technology are driving progress, and Nigeria must not lag behind. Without research, there is no development, and without development, there is no positive change for any country.”

Garba highlighted the importance of prioritizing science research, noting that while the complex is a commendable initiative, it has yet to fulfill its potential due to neglect. He underscored the significance of scientific research in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, housing, and the automotive industry, pointing out that it offers solutions to various challenges.

The lawmaker called for a strategic approach to addressing issues in the science and technology sector. Prof. Paul Onyenekwe, Director-General of SHESTCO, thanked the committee for their visit and expressed hope that they would help resolve the institution’s critical challenges. He praised the committee for their objectivity, commitment, and passion for advancing science research in Nigeria.
