Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has warned against the misuse of her name in political conflicts.
Responding to a false Facebook post alleging that Nigeria’s debt had surged to N24 trillion in two months, Okonjo-Iweala clarified that she never made such a statement. The post had inaccurately quoted her criticizing the current administration’s handling of the country’s debt and fuel subsidy removal.
Okonjo-Iweala took to X to denounce the false remarks, emphasizing, “It appears that there are people in Nigeria trying to use my name and image on social media to fight battles on different sides of the political divide, putting words in my mouth that I never said.”
She firmly stated, “This is a stern warning to all those trying to misuse my name for their political ends that I will continue to rebut any attempts to use my name and image falsely!”
