Police Rescue Retired Shell Worker from Kidnappers in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command successfully rescued a retired Shell Petroleum Company worker who was kidnapped by four armed men dressed in military camouflage on June 17, 2024. The 63-year-old victim, whose identity has been withheld, was found unharmed in Ikot Udobong village, Etim Ekpo local government area, following a swift intelligence-led operation.

ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed in a statement released on Monday that the rescue operation was conducted by SWAT operatives acting on credible intelligence regarding the victim’s whereabouts.

“Upon encountering the kidnappers, a gun battle ensued during which one of the suspects sustained serious gunshot wounds,” John disclosed. “Despite being rushed to the hospital, the injured suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.”

John further revealed that preliminary investigations indicated the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million ransom, which was later negotiated down to ₦20 million. However, no ransom was paid prior to the victim’s rescue. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who managed to escape during the exchange of gunfire.

In response to the successful operation, Commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara, reiterated the command’s commitment to combating crime across the state. He expressed gratitude to the community for their support and urged continued vigilance, encouraging residents to report any suspicious activities or individuals to the police promptly.
