The Osun State Police Command has issued a stern warning to commercial motorcyclists, commonly known as Okada riders, to be vigilant and cautious of criminals posing as passengers with the intent to rob them of their motorcycles. This alert was conveyed in a statement released on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola.
SP Opalola explained that the warning was prompted by a significant increase in reported cases of motorcycle snatching across the state. “The police command is using this medium to caution motorcyclists, especially the commercial ones (Okada), to be cautious of passenger(s) they carry or who employ their services,” she stated.
Detailing the modus operandi of the criminals, SP Opalola revealed that these assailants often hail commercial motorcyclists and lure them to secluded areas, particularly late at night. Once in these isolated locations, the criminals forcibly dispossess the riders of their motorbikes. “The unsuspecting riders are often offered enticing fares that they cannot refuse. These attacks in some cases have left the motorcyclists severely injured or even killed,” she added.
The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, has urged the leadership of the Okada Riders Association in the state to continuously educate their members about the dangers of this emerging crime trend. “The command also advises them to report any suspicious passenger(s) and their activities to the nearest police station,” SP Opalola said.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and visitors in Osun State. SP Opalola emphasized that the command is working tirelessly to apprehend and prosecute those involved in these heinous crimes.
In addition to the advisory, the police have implemented several measures to combat this growing menace. Increased patrols and surveillance in known hotspots have been deployed to deter criminal activities. The command also encourages community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior immediately.
Local government authorities and community leaders have expressed their support for the police’s efforts, stressing the importance of community cooperation in tackling this issue. They urged Okada riders to prioritize their safety over the lure of high fares and to always inform someone of their whereabouts, especially when heading to isolated areas.
The Okada Riders Association has pledged to collaborate closely with the police by organizing workshops and seminars to sensitize their members about the new security threats and best practices to avoid falling victim to these crimes.
