The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State announced the successful conviction of 86 illicit drug dealers between January and May 2024, emphasizing its commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking.
Tijjani Rabe, the narcotics commander of NDLEA, Ogun Command, disclosed these achievements during a press conference held in Abeokuta to mark the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The theme for this year’s commemoration is “The Evidence is Clear; Invest in Prevention.”
Mr. Rabe underscored the importance of proactive measures in preventing illicit drug use, urging families, schools, religious organizations, and professional bodies to invest in prevention strategies. He highlighted the role of peer pressure and the quest for social acceptance in influencing youth towards drug abuse.
The commander outlined the command’s initiatives under the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), focusing on educational campaigns targeting schools and religious institutions to enhance the well-being of residents in the state.
In addition to the convictions, Mr. Rabe reported the seizure of significant quantities of illicit substances during the period, including 3.33 tonnes of marijuana, 10.949 kg of psychotropic substances, and smaller amounts of cocaine and methamphetamine. The agency also confiscated 227 litres of skuchies and 11.0 litres of codeine.
The NDLEA commander further noted that the command apprehended 157 suspected illicit drug dealers, comprising 127 males and 30 females. Additionally, 112 suspected drug users, including five females and 107 males, received counseling and rehabilitation services as part of the agency’s efforts to address drug dependency.
