Nigerian singer Charles Chibuezechukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has opened up about his struggles with public acceptance and severe health issues. In a recent episode of ‘Drip Check,’ the Mavin Records artist revealed the depth of his battle with depression in 2020 and a life-threatening incident in 2022.
Crayon shared that the year 2020 was particularly challenging for him. Despite his efforts to release multiple tracks, none gained significant traction. He released about seven songs that year, but none managed to resonate with the audience as he had hoped.
“2020 was one of my darkest years in the game. I dropped about seven songs and no one gained traction. I remember when I dropped ‘Gbona,’ it was about to take off then COVID-19 struck and everything shut down. And ‘Gbona’ was a club banger. I dropped the video, but it still didn’t pick up. I was dropping songs biweekly,” he said.
The lack of public acceptance took a toll on Crayon, leading to a breakdown in early 2022. He recounted how close he came to losing his life, highlighting the severity of the mental and physical health challenges he faced.
“I had a breakdown in early 2022. People don’t come back from that sh*t, me standing right here now is a miracle. I almost lost my life,” he added.
Crayon’s candid disclosure sheds light on the pressures and mental health struggles artists often face behind the scenes, despite their public personas and success. His resilience and recovery serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support in the music industry.
