Former Ajax winger Finidi George has decided to step down from his role as coach of the Super Eagles, according to Toyin Ibitoye, a former Super Eagles media officer, who announced the news on X.com over the weekend.
Ibitoye’s post read, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
The resignation comes shortly after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) opted to appoint a foreign coach to oversee the team, despite George being appointed as head coach in May.
At 53 years old, George took over the managerial position after Jose Peseiro’s contract expired in February, having previously served as his assistant for 20 months. However, the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin contributed to his decision to step down.
