On the occasion of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, marking 25 years of civil rule, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a significant address at the nation’s capital, Abuja. His speech highlighted the country’s economic challenges and underscored commitments to democratic values and economic reforms.
While celebrating national progress, Tinubu’s speech provoked diverse reactions among the populace. Many Nigerians expressed concerns over the deteriorating economy, widespread corruption, and failures in basic services such as power and water supply. There was also outcry over soaring fuel prices, food inflation, and the depreciation of the Naira. Calls for the government to address rising terrorism and banditry across the nation echoed prominently on social media platforms.
Commentary on social media platforms reflected discontent over the rising cost of living, though some voices defended Tinubu’s efforts to uphold democratic values amid challenges inherited from previous administrations, particularly that of Muhammadu Buhari.
Peter Obi, a presidential candidate under the Labour Party, criticized the administration, citing statistics such as a high hunger index and corruption index, which he claimed showed significant declines. He pointed out drastic increases in the prices of essential commodities and highlighted the depreciation of the Naira against the dollar.
In contrast, Uwemedimo Nwoko, SAN, former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Akwa Ibom State, commended President Tinubu for acknowledging and honoring those who contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey, including those who made sacrifices and lost their lives. Nwoko praised Tinubu for addressing critical issues such as the minimum wage in his Democracy Day speech, describing it as a fitting tribute to the struggles that paved the way for democracy in Nigeria.
The responses showed how mixed the public’s feelings were toward Tinubu’s administration, with critiques and praises for the administration’s efforts despite persistent difficulties in Nigeria’s socioeconomic environment.
