Eight former SpaceX employees have filed a lawsuit against the company and its founder, Elon Musk, alleging they were wrongfully terminated after raising concerns about instances of sexual misconduct and a “frat house” atmosphere at the company.

The lawsuit, filed in a California state court, stems from a June 2022 open letter the employees posted on a company intranet. The letter detailed their grievances and called on management to address Musk’s behavior on X (formerly Twitter) and to enforce a standard of acceptable conduct for all staff. The day after the letter was posted, four of the plaintiffs were dismissed, with the remaining plaintiffs being terminated after an investigation, according to the lawsuit.

In January, the Federal National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) also filed a complaint against SpaceX based on issues raised by nine former employees.

The open letter urged SpaceX executives to condemn Musk’s conduct on social media, citing instances such as Musk joking about rape accusations against him, which he has denied. “As our CEO and most prominent spokesperson, Elon is seen as the face of SpaceX—every tweet that Elon sends is a de facto public statement by the company,” the letter stated, describing Musk’s actions as a “frequent source of distraction and embarrassment.”

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified monetary damages, arguing that Musk’s tweets often mirrored inappropriate behaviors cited in SpaceX’s employee training on appropriate conduct. One plaintiff, Yaman Abdulhak, shared screenshots of Musk’s tweets with SpaceX’s human resources director but received no response.

The lawsuit underscores the ongoing tension between Musk’s public persona and SpaceX’s internal culture, highlighting the broader implications for workplace behavior and corporate responsibility.
