In a tragic incident on Tuesday morning, unidentified gunmen targeted a security checkpoint along the Owerri-Okigwe road in Imo State, resulting in the death of two police officers and one civilian.
The attack occurred around 06:25 am at Akabo in Ikeduru Council Area, according to eyewitnesses. Gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, killing two uniformed police officers stationed at the checkpoint and a civilian inside a nearby house.
A viral video captured the aftermath of the attack, showing the slain officers lying on the ground while another body was found inside a room. Witnesses described the gunmen as driving recklessly in a vehicle, shooting sporadically before targeting the victims.
The incident has instilled fear among residents, prompting shop owners to close their shops and locals to seek safety. One resident expressed uncertainty about the situation, emphasizing the need to take cover until the area calms down.
As of now, Henry Okoye, the State Police Public Relations Officer, has not issued a statement regarding the attack. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
