‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ Leads Nollywood Films at the Box Office Two Weeks in a Row

The Nollywood biopic Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has maintained its position as the second highest-grossing film for two consecutive weeks, according to the latest data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN). Despite being overtaken by the Hollywood movie Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has grossed a remarkable ₦131.4 million so far.

On June 10, 2024, CEAN published a report on the top 10 films in Nigeria, covering the period from June 7, 2024, to June 9, 2024. Bad Boys: Ride or Die debuted at the Nigerian box office on June 7, 2024, and quickly climbed to the top spot, earning ₦68.9 million in its opening weekend.

Meanwhile, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti has outperformed last week’s leader, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which has now slipped to third place with a total gross of ₦105.9 million.

Other notable films in the top 10 include the Nollywood crime film Criminal, which has grossed ₦32.3 million to date, including a weekly gross of ₦8.9 million, securing the fourth spot. The comedy-drama Ajosepo has also had a successful run, earning ₦50.4 million in its first five days (April 10 to April 14) and currently standing at eighth place with a weekly total of ₦2.4 million and an impressive total gross of ₦251.4 million.

New entries like Deafening Silence, which debuted on June 7, 2024, have grossed ₦1.2 million, while the Yoruba epic film Blacksmith: Alagbede rounds out the top 10. Blacksmith: Alagbede has made ₦62 million in total gross, with a weekly earning of ₦974,675.

The ongoing success of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti highlights the increasing popularity and impact of Nollywood films in the Nigerian box office, reflecting a growing appreciation for local cinematic storytelling.
