Data published by Open Nigerian States, supported by BudgIT, reveals that the Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, is the most prudent in managing recurrent expenditures. This achievement has garnered commendation from the Enugu Good Governance Group (E-3G), a local civil society organization.
According to Open Nigerian States, the budget implementation report for the first quarter of 2024 shows that while Benue, Imo, Niger, Rivers, Sokoto, and Yobe States lacked available data, the other 30 state governments collectively spent N986.64 billion on recurrent expenditures. These expenses include workers’ salaries, refreshments, sitting allowances, travel, and utilities.
Lagos State recorded the highest recurrent expenses nationally with N189.62 billion, followed by Delta State at N68.68 billion. In the South East, Ebonyi State had the highest recurrent expenses at N14.95 billion, followed by Abia State with N10.92 billion, and Anambra State with N9.91 billion.
Enugu State, however, stood out with the lowest recurrent expenditures in both the region and the entire country, amounting to just N7.51 billion.
Reacting to this development, Comrade Odinaka Okechukwu, national coordinator of the Enugu Good Governance Group, praised Governor Mbah’s administration for its fiscal discipline. “This is a clear testimony to the high level of fiscal discipline in the Governor Mbah administration and a demonstration that accountability, transparency, and traceability, which he mouthed as guiding principles in public funds, were not mere campaign buzzwords,” Okechukwu stated.
With a recurrent expenditure of N107.2 billion, representing about 21 percent of Enugu’s N521.5 billion 2024 budget, and an impressive N414.3 billion (79 percent) earmarked for capital projects, Governor Mbah has demonstrated a strong commitment to transforming the state.
The Enugu Good Governance Group highlighted that the governor’s focus on capital projects indicates a dedication to disrupting the status quo and achieving comprehensive development across the state. This approach aims to significantly improve infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other critical sectors, thus fostering sustainable growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
Governor Mbah’s administration has also emphasized transparency and accountability in the management of public funds. This includes the implementation of stringent financial controls and regular audits to ensure that expenditures are justified and beneficial to the public. The administration’s prudent fiscal management has not only reduced unnecessary spending but also allowed for greater investment in development projects.
The commendation from E-3G is a reflection of the positive impact of Governor Mbah’s policies on the state’s governance and economic stability. As Enugu State continues to prioritize fiscal responsibility, it sets a benchmark for other states to follow in the pursuit of good governance and sustainable development.
