Several passengers were stranded yesterday after a Kaduna-bound train from Abuja derailed at Asha station in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The incident occurred at approximately 3:52 pm, less than 30 minutes after the train had departed from Kubwa Station in Abuja.
One passenger, who requested anonymity, described the scene: “Passengers are currently stranded, as there are no signs of authorities being notified.”
This marks the second derailment on this route within two weeks. On May 26, another train traveling from Rigasa station in Kaduna to Abuja derailed in a mountainous area near Jere, raising serious concerns about the safety and reliability of this critical transportation link.
The frequent derailments have caused widespread anxiety among commuters who rely on the Abuja-Kaduna train service for its convenience and speed. Many passengers expressed frustration and fear over the recurring incidents, questioning the maintenance and oversight of the rail infrastructure.
In response to the latest incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) issued a statement promising a thorough investigation. “We are deeply concerned about the derailments and are committed to ensuring the safety of all passengers. An inquiry has been launched to determine the cause of these incidents and to prevent future occurrences,” the statement read.
The NRC also announced that emergency services had been dispatched to assist the stranded passengers and facilitate their onward journey. “Our priority is to ensure that all passengers are safely transported to their destinations as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and appreciate the patience and understanding of the traveling public,” the corporation added.
Transportation experts and public safety advocates have called for immediate action to address the underlying issues leading to these derailments. Dr. Olusegun Adeyemi, a transportation consultant, emphasized the need for rigorous maintenance protocols and improved safety measures. “The repeated derailments are a clear indication of systemic issues within our rail system. There must be a comprehensive review of maintenance practices, staff training, and infrastructure integrity to restore public confidence in rail travel,” he stated.
