The Nasarawa chapter of the Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria (MTUN) has announced a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to address the rising issue of motorcycle-related accidents in the state. This was revealed by Kawo Muhammad-Mahmud, the union chairman, during a mega rally organized by the FRSC at the Old Lafia Motor Park in Lafia on Thursday, aimed at raising awareness among union members.
In his speech, Mr. Muhammad-Mahmud expressed his gratitude to Lucia Samuel-Mhii, the FRSC sector commander, for her “timely initiative” in organizing the rally. He emphasized the union’s commitment to enhancing road safety and pledged to implement a comprehensive sensitization program across Nasarawa. This program will educate members on the importance of strictly adhering to traffic regulations and avoiding reckless riding behaviors.
To further ensure compliance, the union chairman announced the formation of a disciplinary team tasked with monitoring members and sanctioning those found guilty of reckless riding or violating traffic rules. “We are determined to instill a culture of safety and responsibility among our members,” he stated.
Earlier, in her address, Ms. Samuel-Mhii underscored the critical need for motorcycle riders to prioritize safety and adhere to traffic protocols. She highlighted the severe risks associated with riding under the influence of hard substances and the dangers of disobeying traffic signals and other regulations. “It is important for every road user, including motorcyclists, whether private or commercial, to obey traffic lights,” she stressed.
Ms. Samuel-Mhii also called on the union to ensure that all members obtain the necessary riders’ licenses, proper number plates, and wear safety helmets. She emphasized that these measures are vital in reducing the severity of injuries in the event of crashes.
The partnership between the MTUN and FRSC aims to foster a safer riding environment in Nasarawa by promoting responsible riding practices and ensuring that motorcycle operators are well-informed and compliant with safety standards. This collaboration represents a significant step toward reducing motorcycle-related accidents and enhancing overall road safety in the state.
