Ahead of WWDC 2024, a new leak reveals Apple’s ambitious plans for the Mail app in iOS 18, featuring significant AI enhancements. Sources indicate that the upcoming iOS 18 beta integrates advanced AI capabilities to improve search results and introduce smart features within the Mail app.
According to the leak, iOS 18’s Mail app will leverage Apple’s on-device Ajay LLM for advanced search functionality. This will enable the app to provide search results linked to Contacts data, locations, and local documents, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, the Mail app will introduce “Smart Replies,” an AI-driven feature that generates automated responses to emails, aimed at optimizing email interactions and saving users valuable time.
AppleInsider reports that iOS 18 will also enhance email categorization using on-device machine learning. The AI will analyze email content to identify time-sensitive messages and classify senders into predefined categories, such as:
- Commerce
- News
- Other
- Promotions
- Social
- Transaction
These categories may be displayed within the app’s user interface or used in the background to help Siri detect different types of emails. Furthermore, iOS 18 and macOS 15 could allow Siri to summarize emails and email threads, providing users with concise overviews of their communications.
Rumors also suggest that AI improvements will extend to Spotlight and Siri. Bloomberg reported that Apple is enhancing Spotlight search with AI and machine learning, enabling it to answer more complex queries and link to apps. This integration will allow users to initiate specific app features directly from Spotlight.
Overall, the integration of advanced AI capabilities in iOS 18 is set to revolutionize the Mail app and other features, making email management and search functionalities more efficient and user-friendly.
