Nigerians Experience Power Supply Restoration as TCN Begins Grid Recovery

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the commencement of the restoration of the national grid, aiming to restore electricity supply hours after the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) suspended their indefinite strike.

The organized labour suspended its strike action for one week following renewed commitments from the federal government. In response, TCN stated that power recovery efforts have begun, starting with the Shiroro Hydropower Substation, which will then restore supply to the Katampe Substation. TCN confirmed that the nationwide blackout was a direct result of the organized labour’s planned strike.

TCN’s statement on Monday read: “At about 3.23 am, TCN commenced grid recovery, using the Shiroro Substation to attempt to feed the transmission lines supplying bulk electricity to the Katampe Transmission Substation. The situation is such that the labour Union is still obstructing grid recovery nationwide. We will continue to make efforts to recover and stabilize the grid to enable the restoration of normal bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres nationwide.”

Earlier on Monday, the organized labour had shut down the national grid to press their demand for the implementation of a new minimum wage. As of the time of filing this report, the power supply has yet to be fully restored by the Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos).

Efforts are ongoing to stabilize the grid and ensure a consistent supply of electricity to all distribution load centres across the country.
