José Mourinho is on the brink of becoming the new head coach of Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, where he will manage Super Eagles star Samuel Osayi-Samuel. This development was confirmed by Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Romano revealed the news on his X handle: “Fenerbahçe are closing in on the agreement to appoint José Mourinho as new head coach! Mourinho has already said YES. Verbal agreement in place and contract now being reviewed by Mourinho’s camp. The announcement can take place today.”
He further elaborated, stating: “José Mourinho’s verbal agreement with Fenerbahçe is on a two-year contract valid until June 2026. It will also include an option for a further season. Jorge Mendes has been negotiating the deal and now it’s time to review and sign all formal documents. Here we go soon!”
Mourinho’s anticipated move to Fenerbahçe comes after his tenure at Serie A heavyweight AS Roma ended. During his time with Roma, Mourinho led the team to their first-ever European title by winning the Europa Conference League in 2022. He also guided them to the Europa League final last season, where they were narrowly defeated by Sevilla on penalties. His contract with Roma was due to expire in June.
Fenerbahçe narrowly missed out on the league title to Galatasaray on the final day of the campaign. The appointment of Mourinho, a manager with a storied career and multiple titles across Europe, is expected to bolster the team’s chances in the coming seasons.
