Ebonyi State experienced a significant shutdown on Thursday as residents adhered to the sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate Biafra Day on May 30th.
The directive resulted in the closure of banks, schools, offices, businesses, eateries, shopping malls, and markets. The roads were largely empty, with motor parks also shut down, though a few commercial motorcyclists were seen operating around the city center. These motorcyclists might have felt secure due to the heavy presence of machine gun-wielding security personnel patrolling in convoys.
In response to the sit-at-home order, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state postponed its delegates congress, which was initially scheduled for today. While the party’s statement cited the need for screening aspirants as the reason for the delay, it is widely believed that the postponement was influenced by the sit-at-home directive.
“The 5-Man Delegates Congress and Councillorship Primary Elections of the party will now hold on Friday, May 31, 2024, in the 13 LGAs across the state,” the statement signed by the party chairman, Stanley Emegha, read.
