The Organized Labour, represented by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has firmly rejected the Federal Government’s latest minimum wage proposal of N60,000. This decision follows a series of unsuccessful negotiations aimed at reaching a consensus on a new minimum wage.
Initially, the government proposed a minimum wage of N48,000, which was subsequently increased to N54,000. Both offers were dismissed by the labour unions. The latest proposal of N60,000, an increase from the N57,000 suggested last week during the Tripartite Committee negotiations, has also been turned down by the Organized Labour.
Labour unions had initially demanded a new minimum wage of N615,000 but later reduced their proposal to N497,000. On Tuesday, they further adjusted their demand to N494,000. Despite these significant concessions, no agreement has been reached.
The Tripartite Committee, which includes representatives from the government, labour unions, and the Organised Private Sector, remains at an impasse. With only three days left before the May 31 deadline set by the labour unions, the pressure is mounting to find a mutually acceptable resolution.
