At least four people have been killed after rain-triggered landslides struck the eastern Indonesian province of West Papua on Sunday, according to a statement from the country’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on Tuesday.

The disaster occurred in the Arfak Mountains region, where heavy rains caused significant landslides. Rescuers managed to save one person using heavy equipment during the evacuation efforts.

BNPB spokesperson Ahmad Muhari confirmed that the rescue operation has concluded, with all known victims accounted for. “The rescue operation had ended as victims had already been found,” Muhari stated.

Despite the end of the immediate rescue efforts, the risk of further landslides in the Arfak Mountains remains high due to forecasts of continued torrential rains in the coming days. Muhari emphasized the need for vigilance among rescuers and urged local residents to seek shelter in safe areas during heavy rainfall to avoid further casualties.

The landslides have highlighted the vulnerability of the region to natural disasters exacerbated by extreme weather conditions. The Indonesian government and local authorities are now focused on preventive measures and raising awareness among the population about the dangers of landslides during the rainy season.

As the threat of additional landslides looms, the BNPB has mobilized resources and personnel to monitor the situation closely. Local communities have been advised to stay informed through official channels and adhere to safety advisories issued by authorities.
