The Kano State government has firmly declared that it will not be intimidated over its recent decision to dissolve the five newly created emirates and reinstate Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II. This assertion was made by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo during a press briefing in Kano on Monday.
The controversy began when Governor Abba Yusuf signed the amended Kano State Emirate Council Law last Thursday. This legislation effectively dissolved the five emirate councils established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in 2019 and removed the emirs appointed under Ganduje’s administration, thereby facilitating the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi.
Deputy Governor Gwarzo emphasized that the state government’s actions were conducted through the proper legal channels and aimed at serving the common good. “Nobody will intimidate us for taking a decision that serves the common good of the people. The importance of peaceful coexistence for the state’s progress and political stability is paramount,” he stated.
Gwarzo further highlighted that Governor Yusuf is dedicated to returning Kano to its foundational values of peace, justice, equality, tolerance, and hospitality. He called for unity and forgiveness among the populace, urging them to work together towards a harmonious and prosperous Kano.
The government’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, reflecting the deep political and social complexities surrounding the emirate system in Kano. The reinstatement of Emir Sanusi, who was controversially dethroned in 2020, marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
