Senate Reaffirms Suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi as Internal Matter

The Senate has reaffirmed that the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) remains an internal affair of the legislative body. Senator Ningi was suspended for three months following his allegations of budget padding, which the Senate deemed a breach of its privileges. His actions were cited as spreading misinformation, disobeying Senate rules, and causing a disruptive session.

At the unveiling of the 10th Senate’s magazine, the Abuja City Journal reported a statement from Yemi Adaramodu, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs. Adaramodu emphasized that the matter of Ningi’s suspension is strictly within the purview of the Senate’s 108 members.

“The issue of Ningi’s suspension is an internal matter. That has been dealt with,” Adaramodu stated, underscoring that any decision regarding Ningi’s suspension must come from the entire Senate body. “Only the entire Senate can take that decision to recall Ningi before the three-month period, not the Senate President.”

Adaramodu further noted, “If our brother wants anything to be done about it, he should put it forward on its merit and we will consider it.” This suggests that while the suspension stands, there is room for reconsideration if a formal and compelling case is presented to the Senate.
