The rising incidence of attacks on military and security forces across Nigeria has been labeled a condemnable trend that could incite civil unrest in the country. This concern was highlighted at a press conference held on Thursday in Abuja by the group Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMICO).
During the conference, CIMICO addressed the recent surge in attacks, particularly noting the violent incident at Banex Plaza, Abuja. The group emphasized that such assaults are not merely against individual soldiers but constitute an affront to the collective sensibility of the Nigerian State.
Speaking on the topic “Incessant Attacks on Nigerian Military and Security Forces: A Dastardly and Condemnable Trend That Can Trigger Anarchy, Unrest, and National Security Destabilization,” Adams Otakwu, Chairperson of CIMICO, stressed the urgent need for mutual respect and cooperation between military personnel and the general populace.
Otakwu elaborated on the potential repercussions of these attacks, warning that continued aggression towards security forces could destabilize national security and lead to widespread anarchy. “These attacks are not isolated incidents; they reflect a growing disrespect for the institutions that are meant to protect and serve the nation,” he stated.
He called on all Nigerians to foster a spirit of cooperation and respect towards the military, emphasizing that the security of the nation depends on the solidarity between its citizens and security forces. “The military is not the enemy; they are our protectors. Disrespecting and attacking them undermines our national security and puts everyone at risk,” Otakwu added.
Otakwu also proposed several measures to address this alarming trend, including enhanced dialogue between the military and civilian communities, increased public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the role and importance of the military, and stricter enforcement of laws against those who perpetrate violence against security personnel.
