Nigeria considering the establishment of a comprehensive database for private security guards, aimed at screening out potential criminals such as rapists and burglars. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo made this revelation during a meeting with private guards held on Tuesday in Abuja.
Highlighting the pivotal role played by private security guards in both the development and national security framework of various nations globally, Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the necessity for Nigeria to align with international standards in security practices, particularly considering the current security challenges facing the nation.
“The potential of private security guards remains underutilized, and the impact of this industry on our national security has been hindered by a lack of standardization,” stated Mr. Tunji-Ojo. “Through policy formulation and adherence to global best practices, the establishment of a database for productivity and efficiency becomes imperative.”
The proposed initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and significantly enhance security across various sectors, thereby instilling confidence among citizens, both in formal and informal settings.
Minister Tunji-Ojo articulated concerns regarding the prevalence of misconduct among some private guards and emphasized the importance of addressing such issues through the implementation of a reliable database. “It is difficult for me to entrust my family’s safety to a guard who may have a criminal background. With a reliable database, such concerns will be alleviated, fostering trust and security,” he remarked.
The minister underscored the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in developing a comprehensive database that would facilitate background checks and ensure accountability within the private security sector. “This initiative will enable individuals to verify the integrity of guards before engagement, thus mitigating the risk of bringing strangers into their homes,” he added.
Minister Tunji-Ojo concluded by affirming that the proposed database would not only enhance security but also foster a sense of familiarity and trust between guards and the general populace, thereby promoting a safer environment for all.
