The Brickhall School in Abuja is in mourning following the tragic death of four-year-old pupil Miguel Ovoke, who choked on a piece of meat during school hours. The young boy was eating a home-made meal when the incident occurred.
The school authorities expressed their deep sorrow, highlighting the swift actions of their trained nurse and the immediate decision to rush Miguel to a hospital. Despite these efforts, his life could not be saved.
In honor of Miguel, the school has closed for a week to allow the community to grieve. They have urged everyone to respect the family’s privacy and dignity as medical professionals and law enforcement agencies complete their investigations.
“It is with profound sorrow and deepest sympathy that we at Brickhall School, along with the Parents Teacher’s Forum, express our heartfelt condolences to the family of our dearly beloved pupil, Miguel Ovoke,” said the school manager. “We are devastated to report that Miguel tragically passed away on April 24, 2024, after choking on a piece of meat offal from his meal brought from home, despite the immediate and expert care provided by our dedicated staff and certified school nurse.”
The school convened an urgent meeting with the community on the day of the incident. Classes were suspended for over a week to honor Miguel’s memory and give everyone time to mourn and reflect on this profound loss.
“We have cooperated fully with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough and compassionate resolution for everyone affected, especially Miguel’s grieving family,” the school manager continued. “The leadership of both the school and the Parents Teacher’s Forum has personally visited Miguel’s family to offer our support and condolences during this indescribably difficult time. We stand with them in their grief and extend our support to all who loved Miguel—his friends, classmates, and our entire community.”
As the school prepares to resume classes, particularly for students preparing for their Senior and Junior School Certificate examinations, the administration reaffirmed its commitment to the well-being and education of all students. They are continuing to work closely with medical professionals, law enforcement, and Miguel’s family to clarify the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
