Internet connectivity in Nigeria is poised to undergo significant improvement following the successful repair of subsea cables that experienced an outage in March 2024, affecting Nigeria and several other West African countries.

MainOne, a leading digital infrastructure company, announced that it has completed repairs to its subsea cable, a crucial conduit for internet capacity to Nigeria. Through collaboration with regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities, MainOne has restored its submarine cable system to full functionality and resumed normal operations.

The outage in March was attributed to seismic activity on the seabed, resulting in internet disruptions in Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and other African nations. Damage to four key cables connecting the region to Europe, including the West African Cable System (WACS), African Coast to Europe (ACE), SAT3, and MainOne, significantly impacted internet speed and accessibility.

MainOne mitigated the impact on its customers by providing restoration capacity and rerouting traffic to other operational subsea cables during the repair process.

Funke Opeke, the managing director of MainOne, expressed gratitude for the support and collaboration of partners, the patience of customers, and the dedication of the company’s team throughout the outage.

The restoration of the MainOne subsea cable is expected to contribute to a marked improvement in internet speed and reliability in Nigeria, enhancing connectivity for businesses, individuals, and institutions across the country.
