Namtira Bwala, a student at Lead British International School in Abuja, has taken legal action against the school management following an incident of bullying by her peers.

Represented by Marvin Omorogbe, Founding Partner of Deji Adeyanju and Partners, Bwala alleges that the school failed to uphold its responsibility of providing a safe and nurturing learning environment.

Filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, the lawsuit demands, among other things, a public apology to be published in two national newspapers and N500 million in general damages.

Bwala’s claim asserts that the school, by accepting her as a student, had a duty to safeguard her from physical and emotional harm as well as any violation of her privacy. She argues that the school’s negligence in preventing the assault, torment, emotional distress, and breach of privacy she endured constitutes a breach of this duty.

The viral video depicting Bwala being physically assaulted by her classmate, Maryam Hassan, brought attention to the issue. In the footage, Bwala is seen being slapped and bullied while being questioned, “Who broke my heart?”
