Organized labor in Ebonyi State took decisive action on Monday by picketing the offices of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in the state capital, Abakaliki. The protest aimed to express vehement opposition to the recent hike in electricity tariffs, echoing similar sentiments from labor unions nationwide.

Led by Ogugua Egwu, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Ebonyi, and his counterpart from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Chidi Igboji, workers converged to voice their discontent with the tariff increase. Igboji articulated concerns that the rise in tariffs would exacerbate the financial hardship experienced by the already marginalized segments of society.

In a statement, Igboji denounced the tariff hike as detrimental to the well-being of the masses, asserting that it perpetuates a cycle of poverty. He emphasized the imperative for EEDC and NERC to consider the plight of the impoverished populace and refrain from further burdening them with exorbitant electricity costs.

“The increase is evil because it is meant to ensure that the poor masses will continue to be poor,” declared Igboji, encapsulating the labor unions’ resolute stance against the tariff escalation. He called upon EEDC and NERC to prioritize the welfare of the vulnerable and alleviate their financial burdens, rather than exacerbating their struggles.

The protest symbolizes the unwavering commitment of organized labor in Ebonyi State to champion the interests of the working class and advocate for social justice. As tensions escalate over the electricity tariff hike, the labor unions stand firm in their resolve to resist policies that perpetuate economic inequality and hardship among the populace.
