The Senate has greenlit a bill that proposes the imposition of the death penalty on individuals convicted of drug trafficking or the use of hard drugs and narcotics.

Titled the “National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act (Amendment Bill) 2024,” the bill received widespread support during the Committee of the Whole session.

The approved amendment modifies Section 11 of the NDLEA Act, expanding the scope of punishable offenses to include importing, manufacturing, producing, processing, planting, or cultivating drugs like cocaine or heroin without lawful authority.

Previously punishable by life imprisonment, these activities will now carry the penalty of death upon conviction.
