Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has voiced his dismay at the significant failure rates observed in the 2024 Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) UTME examination.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Obi expressed grave concern over the alarming statistics, highlighting the urgent need for national attention to address the issue.

The former Governor emphasized that the dismal performance paints a troubling picture of the state of education in Nigeria, noting that the country lags behind peers such as Iran, Bangladesh, and Egypt in educational standards.

Obi underscored the critical role of education in a nation’s development, citing Nigeria’s low Human Development Index (HDI) ranking compared to similar countries.

He drew attention to Nigeria’s literacy rate, which falls below the global average and trails behind other nations with higher literacy rates, indicating systemic challenges in accessing quality education, particularly in rural areas.

Furthermore, Obi highlighted the disparity in university enrollment between Nigeria and countries like Iran and Bangladesh, calling for urgent investment in the education sector, enhanced teacher training programs, and the implementation of inclusive policies to address the underlying issues.
