Governor Francis Nwifuru sanctioned the allocation of N1.6 billion for this purpose, with the committee overseeing the exercise completing the payment of the backlog on Thursday.

As per a statement from the governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Leo Oketa, the second phase of payments, conducted from April 30, 2024, to May 9, 2024, encompassed retirees from both the spill-over list (1996 to 2021) and those retiring from 2022 to 2023.

During this phase, a total of 533 retirees were cleared and remunerated, comprising 256 retirees from the spill-over list and 277 retirees from the 2022 to 2023 cohort. The total expenditure for this phase amounted to N1.4 billion.

The statement highlighted that while 636 retirees were slated for payment during the second phase, only 533 participated in the verification exercise and subsequent disbursement.

Since assuming office, the Ebonyi State Government has successfully settled the gratuity backlog for 2,091 retirees spanning the period from 1996 to 2023, amounting to N5,034,417,123.99.
