Samson Ezugworie, Chief Operating Officer of Seplat Energy, announced plans to augment the company’s gas production capacity by an additional 390 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) by the year’s end.

Speaking at the Oil Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas, on Wednesday, Ezugworie outlined Seplat’s commitment to enhancing its contribution to the domestic gas market.

Currently producing 460 MMSCF of gas per day, Seplat aims to ramp up production to 850 MMSCF per day by leveraging the Assa North Ohaji South (ANOH) and Sapele Gas Plants, both scheduled to come online.

Ezugworie emphasized that the entirety of the increased production would be channeled into the domestic gas market, thereby bolstering economic growth initiatives.

Of particular significance is Seplat’s role in addressing the nation’s gas-to-power challenges. With the Oben gas plant’s output directly feeding into the national grid, the injection of 850 MMSCF of gas is poised to significantly enhance power generation capacity, alleviating constraints in energy supply.

Despite Nigeria’s substantial gas reserves, daily gas production of 7.8 billion cubic feet necessitates the reinjection of 2.2 billion cubic feet to manage extraction operations.

However, daily gas consumption averages 1.5 billion cubic feet, catering to domestic and commercial needs. Additionally, Nigeria exports 3.7 billion cubic feet daily to global destinations via entities like the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited and the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

In a recent interview, Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), underscored Nigeria’s immense potential to drive economic growth and industrial advancement through its vast gas reserves, which currently exceed 200 trillion cubic feet (Tcf). Kyari revealed NNPC’s ambition to elevate the country’s natural gas reserves to an unprecedented 600 trillion cubic feet, signaling a concerted effort to harness Nigeria’s gas wealth for sustainable development and national prosperity.
