Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, Program Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, spearheaded a Nigerian delegation’s recent visit to India.
The delegation comprised members from Nigeria’s transport sector leadership, policy leaders from subnationals, and partners from The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Their primary goal was to investigate India’s successful transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and adoption of Electric Vehicle (EV) Bus Transit in major urban centers, which began over two decades ago following a court judgment.
India’s experience in transitioning to CNG and implementing EV Bus Transit systems served as a blueprint for Nigeria’s aspirations in the energy transition of its transport sector.
With both nations sharing similar characteristics such as massive populations, plural democratic systems, and federal structures, the insights gleaned from India’s journey hold immense significance for Nigeria’s own transition efforts.
The Nigerian delegation was particularly impressed by India’s proactive approach, which initiated the shift to CNG and EV Transit over two decades ago, demonstrating foresight and commitment to sustainability.
Learning from India’s successes and challenges, Nigeria aims to adapt these strategies to suit its unique context and accelerate its own energy transition agenda.
The delegation’s excitement to implement these learnings is evident in their shared enthusiasm to #MoveNigeriaForward.
