The Lagos State Government has introduced the Electronic Physical Planning Permit System, allowing building approvals to be obtained in just 10 minutes. Dr. Olajide Babatunde, the Special Adviser on e-GIS and Urban Development, announced this during a ministerial press briefing to mark the first year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
This innovative system aims to ensure a seamless and efficient process for stakeholders involved in building approvals. The Electronic Physical Planning Permit Process System is part of the state government’s broader efforts to enhance digital governance and efficient urban planning.
The e-GIS project, initiated in 2016 and gaining momentum in 2021 under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s strategic plan, aims to create a comprehensive digital platform for land administration and geographic information services. The e-GIS Office, known as LAGIS, is overseeing the project’s implementation.
A significant milestone was achieved on December 4, 2023, when the bill for the establishment of the Lagos Geographic Information Service (LAGIS) was presented to the Lagos State House of Assembly. Subsequently, the e-GIS Office took over the responsibility of supervising and project managing the upgrade of Lagos’ enterprise GIS and integrated land administration automated system.
This institutionalization led to the creation of an agency known as the Lagos Geographic Information Service. The bill for its establishment was passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly, paving the way for the implementation of the Electronic Physical Planning Permit System.
To ensure a smooth implementation process, stakeholders and the public will be engaged through retreats and sensitization programs. These initiatives aim to foster a better understanding of the bill and the benefits of the Electronic Physical Planning Process System.
With this innovative system, Lagos State aims to lead in digital governance and efficient urban planning, setting a new standard for building approval processes in Nigeria.
