Ekiti Government Issues Warning Against Street Trading

The Ekiti State Government has issued a stern warning to market traders, particularly in Ado Ekiti, against engaging in street trading, emphasizing the hazards and negative impact associated with the practice.

Commissioner for Information, Taiwo Olatunbosun, cautioned against the display of goods on roads, citing the dangers posed to both traffic flow and public safety. He highlighted concerns such as traffic congestion, waste management challenges, and the potential for accidents leading to loss of lives and property.

Olatunbosun underscored the environmental implications of street trading, noting how it obstructs drainage systems, exacerbates flooding during rainfall, and contributes to road deterioration. He emphasized that while the government has constructed multiple markets in Ado Ekiti with proper sanitation facilities and security measures, traders must take advantage of these facilities for their own benefit.

Encouraging traders to relocate to designated market areas, Olatunbosun urged compliance with government directives, warning of enforcement actions against violators. He emphasized that environmental officials would monitor markets regularly to ensure adherence to sanitation standards, with offenders subject to prosecution under state environmental laws.
