Nollywood luminary Femi Adebayo has raised alarm over the escalating issue of film piracy plaguing the Nigerian film industry.
Taking to his Instagram page, @femiadebayosalami, on Tuesday, Adebayo recounted his recent triumph against movie piracy and highlighted the detrimental impact of such illicit activities on the film business.
Expressing concern, Adebayo lamented the inability of filmmakers to fully reap the rewards of their labor due to the rampant piracy prevalent in the industry.
He emphasized, “The Nigerian film industry has witnessed tremendous growth, but piracy remains a significant hindrance, deterring potential investors from fully supporting filmmakers.”
Detailing his personal encounter with movie pirates, Adebayo disclosed his legal battle with a prominent media entity involved in unauthorized distribution of his movie content. Despite the arduous three-year legal process, Adebayo’s perseverance and faith in the legal system ultimately led to a favorable outcome. His legal team, Bola Adebowale & Co Legal Practitioners, played a pivotal role in securing a significant victory, resulting in a substantial monetary award.
Adebayo stressed the importance of filmmakers uniting against intellectual property theft and piracy, urging industry stakeholders to remain vigilant in safeguarding their creative works.
“This victory not only vindicates me as a filmmaker and content creator but also stands as a collective triumph for the entire Nollywood community,” Adebayo declared.
He concluded by emphasizing the necessity for continued efforts in combatting piracy to ensure that creators receive the full economic benefits of their artistic endeavors.
