The United Nations (UN) has condemned Israel’s decision to shut down the operations of broadcaster Al Jazeera within the country, emphasizing the critical importance of press freedom.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, speaking from New York, reiterated the organization’s staunch opposition to any actions that restrict freedom of the press. He emphasized that a free press plays a crucial role in keeping the public informed and engaged.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his Cabinet unanimously voted to close Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel. This decision followed the approval of a new media law, dubbed the “Al Jazeera law,” by Israeli lawmakers. The law grants the government authority to ban foreign broadcasters deemed to pose a threat to state security.
Al Jazeera has condemned Israel’s move and pledged to pursue all available avenues to protect its rights and the well-being of its employees.
