The Enugu Police Command has made significant strides in the investigation of the heinous ambush that led to the tragic deaths of two police officers and three Neighbourhood Watch Group members in Igga community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area (LGA).

According to DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command’s spokesperson, three suspects have been apprehended in connection with the ambush, which he described as an “unprovoked, unwarranted attack and gruesome murder.” The incident occurred last Friday evening when criminal elements within the community launched a surprise assault on the security operatives.

Ndukwe explained that the security team, comprising three policemen and four Neighbourhood Watch Group members, was providing security for a group of visiting investors from Lagos. However, they were met with gunfire from the criminal elements, resulting in the fatal shooting of five security personnel.

While an assistant superintendent of police, a neighbourhood watch operative, and three members of the investor team were rescued, the bodies of the murdered security personnel were initially missing. Subsequently, their lifeless bodies were discovered, confirmed dead by medical professionals, and transferred to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu condemned the attack as inconceivable, cruel, and unjustifiable. He urged members of the Igga community, particularly those involved in the reprehensible act, to surrender to the authorities promptly.
