The Global Risk Modelling Alliance (GRMA), funded by the German Government, has expressed its intention to partner with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

This proposed collaboration aims to leverage open-source platforms and open standards to inform risk financing strategies and provide technical assistance through strategic and operational projects involving key stakeholders in Nigeria.

During a meeting held in Abuja, NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, welcomed the idea of the partnership with GRMA. He emphasized the importance of such collaboration in supporting NiMet’s efforts to improve forecasting and dissemination capacity.

NiMet plays a crucial role in providing early warnings to farmers and stakeholders by downscaling and disseminating seasonal climate predictions (SCP). The agency also issues pilot briefings and daily advisories on weather and climate conditions, particularly for the aviation sector.

GRMA, which collaborates with public and private sector risk experts, aims to enhance capabilities in vulnerable communities for undertaking risk analytics.

Accompanying the GRMA team during the visit was Falemi Ayodeji from the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). Also present were Mrs. Gloria Onyegbule, Director of the Department of Applied Meteorological Services (DAMS), and Mr. James Ijampy, NiMet’s Chief Meteorologist.
