The Nigerian passport has once again been ranked among the least desirable travel documents globally, underscoring significant hurdles for Nigerian travelers seeking international mobility.
In the latest evaluation by VisaGuide’s World Passport Index, Nigeria’s passport landed at the 191st position out of 199 countries, placing it above only North Korea (192), Iraq (193), Libya (194), Sudan (195), Pakistan (196), Afghanistan (197), Syria (198), and Somalia (199).
This ranking amplifies concerns about Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to enhance mobility, including initiatives such as e-visas.
Conversely, the Singaporean passport claimed the top spot, recognized as the most powerful globally, followed by passports from Italy, Spain, France, and Germany.
The report highlights various factors contributing to Nigeria’s passport decline, including visa-free access, diplomatic relations, and security considerations. These factors encompass visa-free travel, electronic travel authorization, visa on arrival, electronic visas (e-visas), embassy or government-approved visas, passport-free travel, and restricted entry.
Furthermore, the Henley Passport Index, which assesses the number of countries passport holders can enter without a visa, consistently placed the Nigerian passport among the lowest-performing travel documents worldwide.
This persistent low ranking underscores the urgent need for Nigeria to address the underlying issues impacting its passport’s global reputation.
