The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) are currently in discussions regarding the provision of specialized SIM cards for students, featuring limited services.

The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, revealed this development, emphasizing the growing importance of candidates’ registered telephone numbers, which have become essential for executing sensitive operations.

Speaking to the media in Lagos on Monday, Professor Oloyede unveiled a novel procedure for admission acceptance. Candidates can now transmit their acceptance or rejection of admission offers via their dedicated telephone lines to 55019/66019. Alternatively, they can personally endorse or decline admission offers, including program changes, using their fingerprint at an authorized CBT center or any JAMB office.

Professor Oloyede emphasized that these new admission decision methods aim to safeguard candidates’ information and maintain the integrity of the admission process. He highlighted the heightened significance of candidates’ registered telephone (SIM) numbers, now essential for conducting increasingly sensitive operations.

In negotiations with the NCC, JAMB seeks to establish dedicated SIMs for students with restricted functionalities to enhance security and streamline communication processes.

Out of the 1,842,464 candidates whose results from the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination were released by JAMB on Monday, seventy-seven percent scored below 200, signaling the need for innovative measures to support students in their academic pursuits.
