Olugbenga Edema, a gubernatorial aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, has urged workers nationwide not to settle for the N70,000 minimum wage threshold.
In recognition of workers’ tireless efforts and dedication, Edema emphasized the necessity for a significant increase in the minimum wage to enhance workers’ standard of living.
Expressing concern over the prevailing economic conditions, Edema asserted that the current minimum wage falls short of meeting workers’ needs and should not be accepted.
“On this significant occasion of May Day, I commend the invaluable contributions of our workforce to the growth and development of our state and nation,” Edema stated.
“It is imperative that we prioritize their welfare by establishing a minimum wage that aligns with the present economic realities. The demand for a new minimum wage is now paramount and should be promptly addressed.”
Edema stressed that workers should not be compelled to cope with a meager N70,000 minimum wage amidst escalating living costs. He proposed a minimum wage of no less than N250,000 monthly, calculated at the rate of N1,250 to a dollar.
He argued that such an increase is indispensable to reflect the economic challenges faced by workers and ensure a decent standard of living for them.
