The management of the University of Benin, located in Edo State, has taken the decision to suspend the students’ union government of the institution indefinitely. This announcement comes as a response to an incident at the university’s Senior Staff Club on April 12th, where students reportedly behaved in an unruly manner, leading to altercations with staff members, including an Academic Staff member who was allegedly assaulted.
In a letter addressed to the university community and released to journalists in Benin City on Tuesday, the Registrar of the university, Ademola Bobola, conveyed the decision. According to the letter, the Vice-Chancellor approved the suspension after careful consideration of the management’s report. The suspension, effective immediately from Monday, April 29, 2024, is indefinite. All officers of the students’ union are instructed to hand over any union property in their possession to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
In response to the incident, the university management promptly established a panel of inquiry to thoroughly investigate the matter and uncover its underlying causes.
